An ointment (lat. Unguentum, abbr.: Ungt.) is a pharmaceutical preparation for skin application that‘s semi-solid with a homogenous appearance (e.g. as a healing ointment). It is used for local application of active substances, protection of the skin and skincare. An ointment consists of a fatty base made of natural or synthetic substances and can be a one- or multi-phase (water-in-oil emulsion) system.
