Antiseptics are disinfectants and therefore chemical substances that are used in medicine to prevent wound infection and consequently sepsis (putrefaction, blood poisoning). To this end, a wide variety of germs must be killed quickly and with sufficient reliability without harming the patient. Antiseptics can have a bactericidal, bacteriostatic, fungicidal and fungistatic effect. Furthermore, they are characterised by a long shelf life and a relatively slight odour.
